Definition
Market Capitalization
The total market value of all of a company’s shares.
Market capitalization, or market cap, is the total value the stock market places on a company — its share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. It’s the standard way to size a business, grouping companies into large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap. Market cap reflects value based on the equity alone; it doesn’t account for a company’s debt or cash, which is why analysts also look at measures like enterprise value.
